What is search engine optimization (SEO)

 Let's use Google as an example to understand what SEO is all about. Whenever someone searches for something online, the result is an ever-increasing list of websites that are then displayed in what is called the SERP or Search Engines Result Page. 



The SERP will usually show the top 10 websites in order from most popular to least popular. These results are always what people are searching for - and they are usually called SERPs because Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) are often the first page on Google. So in reality, if someone were to look for what is seo, they would be looking for the top listings on Google.

It's a set of guidelines for optimising your website so that it can reach higher rankings in major search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, Ask Jeeves and so on. In the past search engines have been bad at classifying what is spam and what is not, which means that a lot of sites have been given their fair share of traffic but have failed to convert that traffic into profits. 

This is because although Google may recognise certain behaviour as spam, it has not been able to make a distinction between what is spam and what is a legitimate marketing technique. However Google is still exploring ways to class genuine website behaviour more favourably, one of the ways they have been testing is via the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Search engine results pages can be defined as a list of links on the search engine results page that point to a particular website. They are sometimes called SERP's by search engines, but the term is generally used interchangeably with the title of this page. It was once thought that Google was the sole owner of the search engine results page, but they have now ceded control to a new company called Overture. 

The company owns around 90% of the search engine market and is responsible for many of the changes being seen in Google. The changes being made today to their algorithm are part of an initiative to combat digital marketing spam.

Search engines first started out placing much less weight or importance on the link popularity of a web page. This meant that even if two sites were found to have roughly the same content and keyword density, their rankings wouldn't be too closely linked. 

In time this has developed into what is known as Google juice. Google juice is essentially the amount of traffic that a particular page is receiving and the search engines consider this when calculating rankings. With more emphasis being placed upon backlinks nowadays it is clear that the importance of SEO is set to become higher.

When someone is searching for a particular keyword they type in the words they are interested in into the search engine search box and a variety of different algorithms take effect. These algorithms determine which websites receive a listing on the first page of the search results.
